 Our History

In March 2013, Karisma Jay founded AbunDance Academy of the Arts with the mentorship of Ms. Cheryl, former Artistic Director of Full of Energy School of Dance. With Ms. Karisma’s 17 years of experience as a teacher, coupled with her “charisma”, so to speak, Ms. Cheryl was confident that passing the torch to Ms. Karisma would help the school to grow and flourish. Once Ms. Karisma graciously accepted the position, the first step was to move the students to a bright and cheerful location where the students and their community could thrive. Now, at our new location, 90 Sullivan Place, with a bigger dance studio, Ms. Cheryl’s aspiration, for all of her students to soar and be free to explore their creativity, is materializing ten-fold.

In November of 2015, Ms. Karisma competed in the 6th Annual Stars of New York Dance Competition and Won! As a result, she won $5000 in Dance scholarships for select students of AbunDance Academy.

Most recently, AbunDance Academy is the recipient of several grants includingBrooklyn Arts Council’s SPARC grant (June 2015), E.D.I.F.Y’s Stars of New York Dance Grant (November 2015), Department of Cultural Affairs’ SU- CASA grant (Jan 2016 and June 2017), Brooklyn Arts Council’s Local Arts Support (June 2016), Brooklyn Arts Fund (June 2016) and Family Circle’s Local Hero feature (Spring 2017).
